A long weekend at the Neighbours

A long weekend at the Neighbours

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence…this proverb inspires the trip to Austria and Slovenia. Our neighbours have some unbelievable treasures in the heat of Europe. The Eisriesenwelt Cave, Hochosterwitz Castle, Schafberg, Zell am See, Hallstadt, Bled lake and castle, Predjana castle, Postojna cave, Bohinj lake…just to mention a few. If you plant to spend your time wisely during a long weekend, you cannot go wrong with these countries.
A lot depends on the season and the attractions you wish to visit. You should either have a proper planning yourself to squeeze most out of your time or join us to forget about planning and organising completely.

Let’s dive right in how the group enjoyed the time in 2 full days. Departure was a bit challenging as the target was to reach Grüner see for sunrise. It meant a 02:00 am departure and 4,5 hours’ drive. The weather forecast suggested clear sky with some cloud which is perfect for a sunrise…in reality we arrived to a snow storm, sun was not even close to break the clouds…A  photographer never regrets using the bad conditions as an advantage. It can always create something different as now everyone is “crazy” enough to be outside in such storm…

After spending some time at the lake the group headed to the next destination, the Kölnbrein dam. The weather turned quite bad and the road to the dam was closed due to the bad conditions. The plan had to be changed heading towards a waterfall, called Fallbachfall. Arrival was just before sunset, luck was on our side as a huge rainbow was waiting for to be captured.

After a pleasing 1,5 hours turned the cars to Villach to have some rest.

Based on the current weather forecast and conditions in Austria we led the group to Bled next morning to catch the sunset at the top of the hill from Bled castle. The entrance is open from 08:00 am and the sun rises as 07:04…you do the math. The only way was to get in first with hope…

Despite the forecast a heavy cloud cover was protecting our lake from the sun. The wind wasn’t fruitful either. However some fog sneaked in for a few minutes then the wind made its duty and cleaned it up. Then the perspective has been changed. The church on the tiny island is the other iconic spot within reach. The clouds started to vanish the wind stopped and the lake calmed down. That was the moment for long exposure shot with ND filters, panoramas and creative work. You can always highlight one epic spot during the trip…this time that was it…

As the hours were flying we had to move as well to get to our final destination, the lake in Bohinj. The weather was still challenging, there were no colours, was snowing most of the time, there was no proper reflection…however everyone had some moments and pleasing images.

After 2 long and exhausting days with extreme weather conditions we all returned home safe and sound and were pleased with all the beauties absorbed.
